EIA STUDY UPGRADE AND TENDER DOSSIER PREPARATION FOR THE PROJECT ON MAJOR OVERHAUL OF THE IRON GATE I NAVIGATIONAL LOCK
(IRON GATE I NAVIGATIONAL LOCK)
The hydropower and navigation system “Đerdap 1” is located at 943 km from the Danube confluence near Sulina, or 9 km upstream of Kladovo, and consists of a dam located in the middle of the river, two plants located in the dam extension toward the banks and two double-stage navigation locks located next to the Serbian and Romanian bank of the Danube River.
The Project is compliant with Strategic Environmental Assessment of Spatial plan of special purpose of international waterway E 80 – Danube River (Pan-European Corridor VII).
OVERALL OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE
The main objective of this project is to improve navigation along the Danube, provide for an uninterrupted development of water transport, ensure the continuity of the waterway and improve reliability and efficiency on the Basic TEN-T network – the Rhine-Danube Corridor.
The Danube is an international waterway and inevitably the successful completion of the project will increase use of the waterway and reduce transit times. The river traffic on the Serbian part of the Danube is mainly transit from the Black Sea to Hungary, Austria and Germany; therefore, the implementation of this project will have a positive impact on the cost level of transport, which will contribute to economic development.
The purpose of the Project is to develop legally required Environmental Impact Assessment Study according to the European Directives and National Legislation and Tender documentation in accordance with EU PRAG or EIB requirements and FIDIC Yellow Book regulations, for launching public tender for construction.
